Samut Songkhram is a small province, not very far from the capital city of Thailand. From Bangkok, it hardly takes around an hour to cover the 72 kilometers to reach Samut Songkhram. This is the right place for you if you are interested in knowing more about Thailand multifaceted culture and traditional way of life.
There are no historical records available to show when Samut Songkhram town, the provincial capital, was established. However, according to many experts this was earlier a district in Ratchaburi Province named Suan Nok. During the transition from Ayutthaya period to Thon Buri period, the district was separated from Ratchaburi Province and name Mueang Mae Klong. Fortunately there is historical evidence to prove that Samut Sonkhram was the royal capital during the reign of King Taksin, the Great.
Samut Songkhram offers many historical and cultural sites that you can visit but no visit is complete without Ban Khao Yi San Museum. This museum is located in the same compound as a temple and is housed in Sala Kan Parian. Ban Khao Yi San Museum was established in 1996 with a joined effort of the local authorities and the people of Yi San community, who wanted a place to highlight their local history and culture.
The Yi San community has been living in Samut Songkhram since the Ayutthaya period and the museum is used to inform the people about this little-known community. Here, at Ban Khao Yi San Museum, you many displays like cultural exhibits, tools for making herbal medicines, utensils, folk stories as well as exhibits on life of Yi San community.
The museum is open only on weekends from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. and you have to pay around 30 Baht for a whole day visit. This visit also includes a complimentary lunch.
